Delton is a very special little boy who’s already been through a lot in his short life.
At his 20 week scan, he was diagnosed with a very serious case of spina bifida and hydrocephalus. He was born in September 2008 via C-section because of the cyst on his back. At just one day old he had his first operation: to remove the cyst on his spine. From theatre he was transferred to Intensive Care, then on to the High Dependency Unit and then on to Nursery. If all had gone well, next stop should have been home to his family, but sadly he took a turn for the worse, with his hydrocephalus causing breathing difficulties.
He was rushed back to Intensive Care and put on a ventilator whilst he was prepared for his next operation: to have a VP shunt inserted. Haemorrhaging after the operation meant he was kept on the ventilator for a week, rather than just a day. Operation three followed quickly, removing the top 2 bones from his spine. During all of this he also suffered complications with swelling in the brain which has resulted in difficulties with breathing, swallowing and feeding.
Next Delton caught meningitis in his shunt and had to have yet another operation to move the shunt from the right to the left.
With Delton just 6 weeks old, Tarryn was told that there was nothing more that could be done and to prepare herself for the worst. Delton was moved back to Withybush, his local hospital, so that family and friends could say their goodbyes.
His ventilator was turned off…
But Delton being Delton, he kept on going!
Eight years on, he’s a lively little lad who causes chaos whizzing around in his wheelchair. He’s had various other issues as he has grown up: he still needs a ventilator at nights and is mainly tube-fed (though progress is being made towards eating – which he is thrilled about) and being non-weight bearing has lead to weakening of the bones in his legs – he spent much of 2017 in plaster and stuck in bed.
He doesn’t let his disabilities define him though: his favourite colour is orange; his favourite foods are Marmite & Nutella (not together!) and he loves singing along to Bohemian Rhapsody.
